Schlegel Genetics focuses on carcass traits and growth but also recognizes the need to make functional, productive, efficient cows with muscle, good feet and udders, and quiet disposition. Bulls and heifers are developed on cover crops to ensure foot quality as well as overall structure and longevity.
They implemented a whole herd AI program in 2010. The cows are synchronized and AI’d one time and then cleaned up for 45 days. The heifers are synchronized and AI’d and cleaned up for 30 days. This, along with strict culling, is to maximize fertility.
